Let's Get Started

As some of my friends know I've been thinking about singleness quite a bit lately. Last week I was struck by it a bit after watching the series finally of "Friends". I appreciated a comment that John Stewart made on "the Daily Show" following that night. He said something about now with "Friends" being done maybe people can go out and make some of their own. How interesting it is to witness this transient culture desperately seeking connection and so many do so through living vicariously through a television show like "Friends." In this world of mass media and high speed internet that is said to bring us together, have we actually created such barriers that we no longer know how to make, or be friends ourselves?

I wonder that about myself as well. I find myself desperate for community. Those passages in the Bible that speak about community jump out at me like a deer along the side of the highway. Yet I can't help but wonder in what way I am to blame for the lack of community that I feel in my life. True, some of it is a lack of recognition of what I really do have. However, I sometimes fear that while I desire to be a part of community I somehow don't know how to be a part of it. So goodbye "Friends" it's time for me to spend some time with real ones now.
